Buying a San Francisco gift for a San Franciscan is a trap. They own the tote bag. They have opinions about the bridge mug. Anything with a cable car and the word "Frisco" on it will be thanked for and never seen again.
The rule we use is simple. If you could buy it at the airport, skip it. A good local gift is specific enough that the person opening it thinks you were paying attention: their neighborhood, their commute, their team's worst decade, the thing they order without looking at the menu.
Here are nine people you probably know, and what we'd give each of them.
The one who moved away and won't stop talking about it
They live in Austin or Brooklyn now and check the fog cam. Give them the weather. The Karl Was Here Long Sleeve has the fog loitering on a beam of Sutro Tower, which is exactly what it does.
The transit loyalist
Knows which Muni lines run historic cars. Has a favorite BART seat. The F Line T-Shirt honors the vintage streetcars on Market Street, and the Transit Boxy Tee gets BART, Muni, Caltrain and VTA onto one shirt, which is more coordination than the agencies usually manage.
The season ticket holder
You don't need a licensed logo to say where you sit. The Cove Dweller Long Sleeve is for anyone who has watched kayakers chase a home run ball across McCovey Cove. It's also one of our best sellers.
The home bartender
They will tell you the Mai Tai was invented in Oakland in 1944. Now they can point at their own chest while they do it. Pair the Mai Tai Washed T-Shirt with a bottle of decent aged rum and you are done shopping.
The one who reads every plaque
Dozens of Gold Rush ships are still buried under the Financial District, paved over as the shoreline moved east. This person already knows that and will be delighted you do too. The Built on Buried Ships T-Shirt is the gift. The Fire Callbox T-Shirt is the backup.
The weekend escape artist
Gone by 6 a.m. on Saturday, back Sunday night with pine needles in the car. The Redwoods T-Shirt, Yosemite T-Shirt and Big Sur T-Shirt cover north, east and south. Pick the direction they drive most.
The animal person
Sea otters nearly vanished from this coast and came back. That alone earns the Excited Otter Sweatshirt a spot here. For someone with more attitude, the Fighting Pelican Sweatshirt is a small chest graphic of a bird that has never once backed down.
The Mission regular
Lives within four blocks of their taqueria and intends to keep it that way. The Mission T-Shirt is the neighborhood portrait. The Taco Truck T-Shirt is for the hour after the bars let out.
The person who wears one color
No big graphic, no joke, nothing to explain. Just the mark. The Essential Grey Hoodie is fleeced, boxy and heavy enough for a July evening at Ocean Beach. It is the safest gift on this page and the one most likely to be worn three days a week.
